Baser Amer and the Bolts frustrate TNT with a big comeback win.
This was a complete turnaround on the part of Meralco.
Down big in the first half to TNT, the Bolts had a rush of power in the second and surged past the KaTropa, picking up an 88-77 win in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Meralco trailed by as many as 21 in the first half before clamping down on defense in the second, limiting TNT to only 38 points in the last two quarters to complete a 32-point turnaround.
The Bolts started slow giving up 13 straight point to TNT to start and were down by 21 in the second quarter, 9-30.
Fortunately, Meralco managed to cut the deficit to nine entering the break before turning the tables on the KaTropa in the second half with a masterful defensive performance.
“We’ve been getting off to bad starts this conference that’s why I tried to switch up my starting lineup today, but we still got off to a bad start,” head coach Norman Black said.
“The only fortunate thing was it was only for the beginning of the game, so we had a lot of time to recover,” he added as his team improved to 2-2.
Five players scored in double figures for Meralco led by Chris Newsome with 20. The former Rookie of the Year also had nine rebounds and five assists.
Baser Amer added 17 for the Bolts while Jared Dillinger chipped in with 16.
For TNT, only Jayson Castro and RR Pogoy cracked double digits with 20 and 15 points respectively. The KaTropa’s steak stopped at two games and the team dropped to 2-3 for the season.
