PBA: Abueva, Phoenix piling up wins in preparation for SMC

Phoenix continues to impress this season and the Pulse Fuel Masters are winning all the close games.

Wednesday against an undermanned but tough NLEX crew, Phoenix was once again pushed to the brink as the team had to defend an 83-82 lead with 2.3 seconds to go.

But as with their previous outings in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, the Fuel Masters prevailed in the end.

In this particular game, Calvin Abueva blocked a game-winning attempt from NLEX’s Bong Galanza, preserving Phoenix’s unbeated slate.

“Nag-help lang ako dahil naiwanan yung teammate ko,” Calvin said on his clutch block.

With a 5-0 mark, Phoenix maintains pole position in the All-Filipino.

However, that’s no cause for celebration according to the team as the Fuel Masters are yet to face the heavyweights of the league.

Phoenix going 5-0 in its first five games felt like a requirement almost as they looked to pile up wins before going up against the tournament favorites.

This early, Phoenix is trying to angle itself to the playoffs and the early wins have certainly helped.

Six wins usually gets teams into the PBA playoffs. Any number more than that gives teams a chance for advantages.

“Naka-focus kami sa end game,” Abueva said.

”Pinu-pwesto na namin sarili namin sa quarters,” he added.
