Maverick Ahanmisin remains as Rain or Shineís number 1 point guard now but Nambatac is proving himself as a valuable no. 2 as he eases himself in the PBA in his sophomore season.
When Rain or Shine drafted Rey Nambatac, the former Letran Knight was to be groomed as the team’s point guard of the future.
And with the Elasto Painters losing Chris Tiu to retirement, a huge spot has opened up for Nambatac.
Maverick Ahanmisin remains as Rain or Shine’s number 1 point guard now but Nambatac is proving himself as a valuable no. 2 as he eases himself in the PBA in his sophomore season.
“Actually last year pinaghahandaan ko na yun eh, kasi anytime soon pwede ako magkaroon ng mahabang minutes or madadagdagan ng konti yung minuto. Ito nangyari ngayon, nagkakatugma dun sa pinaghahandaan ko,” Nambatac said.
“Syempre mahirap din punan yung ginagawa ni Chris Tiu eh, so ang sakin lang, dun lang talaga ako mag-stick sa kung ano kulang and pupunan ko yun sa defense. Kasi yung defense, yun yung bread and butter talaga namin,” he added.
Nambatac has been consistent so far this season for the Elasto Painters.
Friday against Northport, Nambatac was one of six players in double figures with 11 points.
More important however, is the fact that Nambatac scored seven of his points in the fourth quarter just as ROS proved to be the steadier team to claim the win.
“Masaya ako kasi unti-unti nabibigyan ako ni coach ng break,” Nambatac said.
“Ako naman pag nasa loob ng court, pinupunan ko lang kung ano yung kulang sa team, which is yung hustle and defense and hindi ako umaalis dun sa role ko sa team,” he added.
