TNT takes down another SMC rival.
The KaTropa got back on the winning track in a big way Sunday, surviving Magnolia in overtime, 80-75, in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup at the MOA Arena.
After somehow forcing extra time with a timely Troy Rosario basket with 2.1 seconds to go in regulation, TNT turned to RR Pogoy to finish the job.
Pogoy scored five straight, a triple and a pretty fallaway, to give TNT a crucial 79-74 lead in the final minute. It was enough for the KaTropa to take the victory.
“Nag-stick lang kami sa system namin. Hindi kami bumitaw. Yun lang, may mga lapses din, especially sa defense. May mga rotation kami na may mga miscommunications,” head coach Bong Ravena said.
“But yun na nga, ang usapan talaga namin, yung sistema, basta wag lang silang... trust the process, stick with the system, para masanay na sila,” he added.
It was a tightly-contested game between the two teams, one that was a defensive struggle right from the start.
TNT was mostly getting by RR Pogoy’s scoring in the first half but after the break, the KaTropa turned to Jayson Castro for some much-needed spark.
Castro barely rested in the second half and overtime, pouring 20 points as TNT barely avoided another crushing defeat.
TNT was led by Pogoy with 26 points while the Blur was good for 24. Troy Rosario capped things off with 15 points, including the shot that forced overtime.
For the Hotshots, second-year shooter Robbie Herndon fired 16 points while Ian Sangalang added 15 points.
