There’s a new no. 1 team in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.
Rain or Shine stopped Phoenix’s unbeaten run in the All-Filipino, scoring a huge 98-94 overtime win Sunday at the Big Dome.
James Yap failed to give ROS the win in regulation but the Elasto Painters recovered in extra time, getting timely baskets from Rey Nambatac and Mark Borboran to pull off the victory.
ROS climbed to 6-1 and is now in the middle of a four-game winning streak. Phoenix dropped to 5-1 with its first loss of the year after a franchise-best start.
“Another good win for us. Phoenix came back. We had a good lead, and they didn't stop. That's probably a reason why they're on top, because they never gave up,” head coach Caloy Garcia said.
“They fought their hearts out. We just hit the big shots at the end,” he added.
After Rookie of the Year Jason Perkins sent the game into overtime tied at 87-all, ROS once again relied on balance to see things through in extra time.
Four different Elasto Painters scored in the extra five minutes with the marginal buckets courtesy of Nambatac and Borboran.
Kris Rosales and Beau Belga led ROS with 16 points each while Maverick Ahanmisi came through with 13 points.
Raymond Almazan and Rey Nambatac scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
Perkins finished with a career-high 27 for Phoenix, 15 from the third quarter onwards.
Calvin Abueva and Matthew Wright fired 16 points apiece for the Fuel Masters.
