Role players are stepping up for Alaska, which is a good thing, but one player remains as the team’s driving force to success. That player of course, is Chris Banchero.
Despite being severely undermanned, Alaska is somehow getting by in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.
After Wednesday’s close win over Blackwater, the Aces are now winners of back-to-back and will enter the Gilas break with a respectable 2-1 record.
Role players are stepping up for Alaska, which is a good thing, but one player remains as the team’s driving force to success.
That player of course, is Chris Banchero.
Alaska’s lead guard was on point against the Elite, scoring 11 points and more importantly, dishing out a career-high 16 assists.
Banchero was feeding everyone, leading to a career-high performance.
Unfortunately, Banchero didn’t have a chance to talk about his masterful showing as he had to rush to the hospital to have his bad stomach checked but his head coach did have something to say about his 16 dimes.
“One of the things I've talked about with Chris prior to last season was, he's got an ability to get PBA players open shots that a lot of guys don't have,” Alex Compton said of his no. 1 point guard.
Compton says Banchero has an elite ability of creating opportunities for his teammates and it’s no surprise that he led the league last season in assists.
“It's not purely unique, it's not completely different than anybody else in the league. But he's got one of those upper echelon abilities to create for other people,” Compton said.
“And, since we talked about it, he led the league in assists last year,” he added.
