PBA: Meralco outlasts Northport in double OT
The Bolts arrested a three-game slide in the All-Filipino, improving to 3-5 in the team standings.

It took an additional 10 minutes but Meralco finally got another win in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.

The Bolts survived Northport in two overtimes Friday at the Big Dome, taking a well-deserved 126-123 win.

Chris Newsome helped force the first overtime and Baser Amer finished the job in the second extra session as his eight straight points, including back-to-back triples, gave Meralco the needed separation to pick up the victory.

The Bolts arrested a three-game slide in the All-Filipino, improving to 3-5 in the team standings.

“That was a hard-fought game between two teams that are really fighting for their lives to stay in the playoffs. Especially us. Just happy that the players never gave up,” head coach Norman Black said.

“There were stretches in the fourth quarter where it looked dim for us, but we were able to execute some plays down the stretch to send the game into overtime and give ourselves a chance to win in double overtime,” he added.

A close game throughout, it appeared that the Batang Pier were on their way to a victory in regulation after taking a 106-100 lead with 30 second to go.

But the Bolts would prove to be stubbornn late, with two layups from Cliff Hodge and Chris Newsome forcing extra time.

Both teams fought to another stalemate, setting up Baser’s heroics in the final overtime period.

Three players scored at least 20 for Meralco with Chris Newsome leading the way with 28 on top of 12 rebounds and seven assists. Amer and Cliff Hodge were good for 23 points each.

Northport lost a fourht straight game, dropping to 2-4 in the standings. Stanley Pringle scored 33 while Sean Anthony put up 31 points and 16 rebounds in a losing effort.

NorthPort 123 - Pringle 33, Anthony 31, Tautuaa 21, Grey 15, Bolick 5, Taha 4, Elorde 4, Guinto 4, Flores 2, Arana 2, Sollano 2, Gabayni 0, Lanete 0.

Quarters: 28-22, 49-46, 76-72, 106-106, 126-123.
