PBA: Phoenix beats Northport in wild ending
The Fuel Masters took another close win Wednesday in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, this time a 98-96 win over the Northport Batang Pier at the Big Dome.

The final minute was reduced to a series of bad calls for both teams but Phoenix managed to somehow end up with more points on the board.

The Fuel Masters took another close win Wednesday in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, this time a 98-96 win over the Northport Batang Pier at the Big Dome.

Jason Perkins scored the marginal free throws for Phoenix and the team sealed the win on the other end with a stop, forcing rookie Robert Bolick to shoot a triple from the parking lot.

Bolick missed.

Phoenix argued a number of calls that went against their way but easily the most controversial was the offensive foul called on Sean Anthony with about 47 seconds left in regulation, a decision that ended up favoring the Fuel Masters.

Tied at 96, Anthony drilled a booming triple for the lead. However, he was called for an offensive foul on Justin Chua. Replay showed that it should have been clean and even a four-point play in Northport's favor.

That proved to be the game changer as Phoenix would cash in on two free throws on the other end and the Batang Pier failed to answer via Bolick as time expired.

"Our character defensively, nag-i-improve," head coach Louie Alas said.

"Four of our six won games, galing sa defensive stop," he added.

Matthew Wright finished with 22 points to lead Phoenix while Justin Chua added 19 points and nine rebounds. Calvin Abueva and Jason Perkins were good for 14 and 12 points respectively.

Northport, who now lost three straight after a 2-0 start, got 22 points from Mo Tautuaa and another 20 from Anthony.

The Batang Pier missed Stanley Pringle due to suspension.
