PBA: Help arrives on time as Japeth makes game-saving block
Holding on to a one-point lead, Aguilar blocked Calvin Abueva in the final 4.5 seconds, preventing the Fuel Masters from winning yet another close outing in the All-Filipino.

Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup, Japeth Aguilar made the play of the game in the incredible matchup between no. 1 Phoenix and Brgy. Ginebra.

Holding on to a one-point lead, Aguilar blocked Calvin Abueva in the final 4.5 seconds, preventing the Fuel Masters from winning yet another close outing in the All-Filipino.

Ginebra would hold on for a 100-97 victory.

“Yun lang yung role ko primarily eh, focus lang sa help defense,” Japeth said.

“I was just on the help side. I was just playing the ball so yun, nung nakita ko na pinasa kay Calvin, nag-help na lang ako. It was a team defense though, na nakuha ko yun,” he added.

In taking down Phoenix, the Gin Kings got a big morale boost as they look to rebound from an inconsistent start to the season.

The win pushed Ginebra to 4-3 and their quest to the playoffs has officially truly begun.

“It’s really more than just a win, it was a test of our character. Madaming nag-step up sa mga teammates ko and ayun, talagang they gave it their all,” Aguilar said.

“There’s a lot of times when it could have been Phoenix’s way, they’ve been playing on another level. Talagang lumaban lang kami,” he added.

Still, while it was a nice win for the barangay, Aguilar says they’re far from done.

“There’s a lot of room for improvement pa. Hindi kami satisfied sa win na to,” he said.

“We have another week to prepare for our next game so hopefully tuluy-tuloy yung improvement ng team namin,” Japeth added.
