“Hindi pumasok pero open eh, na-Japeth Aguilar eh. Wala sa akin yun. Ang importante ginawa namin trabaho namin ng maayos,” — Calvin Abueva.
Phoenix was on the verge of winning yet another close game in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.
Down one with less than 10 seconds to go, Matthew Wright drove to the lane, drawing three Ginebra defenders.
Wright then found Calvin Abueva wide open for a go-ahead layup but a split second after the Beast elevated for the shot, Japeth Aguilar somehow managed to rotate to meet him at the apex.
Japeth blocked Calvin and the Gin Kings went on to win by three.
“Mahaba eh, wala tayong magagawa,” Abueva said on the play.
“Hindi pumasok pero open eh, na-Japeth Aguilar eh. Wala sa akin yun. Ang importante ginawa namin trabaho namin ng maayos,” he added.
Despite the loss, Phoenix retained the no. 1 spot in the All-Filipino.
The Fuel Masters have another chance to secure the top seed come playoff time. They have the four-time champion San Miguel Beermen up next.
“Muntik pa kaming manalo eh. Pero nandoon pa rin yung sistema namin na maglaro as a team,” Calvin said.
“Paghahandaan namin ito. Crucial na game ito para nasa top seed kami,” he added of the Beermen.
