That would-be game-winner for Meralco was a shot Baser Amer knew a thing or two about
Meralco was down two points, 85-87, in the endgame up against Rain or Shine on Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Still, six seconds remained on the clock and the Bolts had the perfect play that would have won the game for them or, at the very least, sent the two teams to overtime.
What started playing out, however, was shut down by the Elasto Painters. "It was a broken play kasi maganda yung depensa ng Rain or Shine, na-deny lahat," Baser Amer, who was initiating the play, told reporters post-game.
And so, the ball stayed in the hands of Amer who then had a good look from the top of the key. "Kinuha ko na lang yung bola tapos paglabas ko, na-open," he said.
The heady guard then took the Bolts' chances in his hands and was nothing but confident he could have made something out of nothing.
After all, that was a shot he knew a thing or two about. "Sayang yung last shot. Talagang pina-practice yun bago magsimula yung practice," he shared.
He then continued, "Kaya nga kanina, pagpasok sa dugout, napaluha ako kasi ineensayo ko yun sa practice. Sayang, sayang talaga kasi tira ko talaga yun."
In the end, Amer was only left to rue the would-be game-winner that would have bolstered Meralco's bid for the playoffs.
Now at 3-6, they find themselves in a must-win situation just to have a shot at the next round.
Nonetheless, the 26-year-old point guard said the Bolts will continue to go all-out. "Siguro, the last two games namin, may chance or wala, kailangan naming ipanalo. Wag na naming tignan kung sino makakalaban namin, wag na naming tignan yung standings," he said.
He then continued, "'Di pa naman tapos so focus lang kami sa next practice and last two games. May ibang games naman na malalaro [yung ibang teams], malay mo."
