PBA: Phoenix takes no. 1 with big win over San Miguel

Phoenix has locked up the no. 1 seed in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.

The Fuel Masters survived the four-time champion Beermen Saturday in Panabo, pulling off a pulsating 96-93 victory.

With a 9-2 record, Phoenix achieved its best regular season finish in franchise history and will go to the playoffs as the top seed.

The Fuel Masters will hold a twice-to-beat edge against the 8th-ranked team come the quarterfinals.

Tied at 90, Matthew Wright hit a booming triple with 1:15 to go for the lead. That was followed by a clutch hit from Jason Perkins as Phoenix managed to hold off San Miguel who entered the game with a four-game winning streak.

The Beermen dropped to 6-4 with the loss.

Matthew Wright led the Fuel Masters with 25 big points. Five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo paced the Beermen with 29.
