Playoff mode is still good for Magnolia.
The Hotshots recovered from their Manila Clasico loss and beat Northport Wednesday in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup at the Big Dome, 103-90.
With its signature defense in full effect in the fourth, Magnolia got back on the winning track and got its fourth victory against five losses.
At 4-5, the Hotshots remain in the thick of things as the playoff race continues to heat up.
“It’s all about our defense in the second half,” head coach Chito Victolero said as his Hotshots outscored Northport 27-8 in the fourth quarter.
“Sa locker room, I told them if we don’t play D in the second, we will lose this game,” he added.
Fortunately for the reigning PBA Coach of the Year, the Hotshots responded with an incredible defensive effort in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter.
Northport hit 90 points with over four minutes to go and would never score again as the Hotshots finished the game with a nice 10-0 run.
Despite a bum knee, Paul Lee fired a game-high 24 points for Magnolia. Ian Sangalang also had a good game, posting 20 points.
Northport got 22 points and eight rebounds from Sean Anthony but the Batang Pier absorbed a 6th straight loss for a 2-6 record.
