CALASIAO, Pangasinan — PJ Simon takes over from his old pal James Yap as the PBA’s 3-point king.
Simon won the 3-point shootout in the 2019 PBA All-Star Games here Friday, holding off Northport rookie Babes Bolick.
The veteran Magnolia gunner tied for first place in the opening round with 20 points and was the first shooter in the final round.
PJ shook off a slow start and eventually scored 17 points.
NLEX’s Philip Paniamogan shot second and scored 14, eliminating him from contention. Bolick went last and made the first four shots of the final rack, giving him 16 points.
Bolick let go of the last money ball in the final second that would have allowed him to take the title. He barely missed.
Simon’s victory comes a year after Yap, proving that age is just a number for the one they call the Scoring Apostle.
Yap, who entered as defending champion and was gunning for a third title, dropped out of the opening round, scoring only 12 points.
San Miguel’s Marcio Lassiter, widely-regarded as the best shooter in the PBA, finished last with only seven points. He didn’t finish the entire set, running out of time in the final rack.
