Don’t look now but Northport is making a serious push to the playoffs after a long losing skid almost left the team for dead.
The Batang Pier managed to hold off Alaska in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday, picking up a big 94-84 victory at the Big Dome.
Nortport made it back-to-back wins headed into the All-Star break and the Batang Pier are now at 4-6, knocking on the door of the All-Filipino playoffs despite suffering a mid-tournament skid that lasted six games.
“Talagang yung mga players, they want this win,” head coach Pido Jarencio said.
“Para sa kanila, they want to make a name for themselves na do-or-die game ito tapos mananalo,” he added.
Rejuvenated after a big win over TNT, the Batang Pier controlled the showdown against the Aces, leading by as many as 14 points.
However, Northport gup a huge run to start the fourth. Unlike their previous losses though, the Batang Pier recovered behind Stanley Pringle to pull through for the victory.
Pringle scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth period for Northport to seal the crucial win.
Sean Anthony actually led the Batang Pier with 24 and 17 rebounds. Mo Tautuaa and Jonathan Grey added 14 and 13 points respectively.
Alaska finished with a 4-7 record and will now need help to make the playoffs. The Aces got 23 points from Carl Bryan Cruz while Sonny Thoss was good for 14 points.
