PBA: Ginebra will be ready for Manila Clasico says Cone
After taking a beating to Magnolia is the last Manila Clasico series, losing their Governors’ Cup title in the semifinals, 1-3, Cone says it’s important for them to come out strong early.

Challenge accepted says Barangay Ginebra.

The Gin Kings are locked in a Manila Clasico series against Magnolia rather early this season as both rivals square off in the quarterfinals of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.

Magnolia made the match-up official with a convincing romp of NLEX in Wednesday’s first game and while Ginebra dropped a close decision to Northport in the game that followed, the Gin Kings were the no. 3 seed since before the All-Star break.

It was up to the Hotshots to seal the Clasico quarters and they did and now, the Gin Kings are ready.

“Obviously, they wanted to play us,” Ginebra head coach Tim Cone said of Magnolia.

“They blew out their opponent so they could have an opportunity to play against us. We know that. We’re sister teams but we’re not friendly,” he added.

For the second straight conference, Manila Clasico will feature in a playoff series.

But while this one is shorter as a best-of-3 affair, it’s should still emerge as one of the best in the All-Filipino’s first round of the playoffs.

“They’re playing at a high level, they’ve recovered back from their championship hangover and they’re ready to move forward,” Cone said as the Hotshots enter with three straight wins and won five of their last six games.

“I think we’re king of in a roll too. That’s why I think it’s gonna be a great series,” he added.

This one is a shorter series, the Gin Kings are out if they go down 0-2 like last time.

“We've got two days now to prepare for Magnolia. Last series we played, they beat us up. They beat us three games out of four,” he said.

“We gotta come out and be ready for them. I thought this game prepared us. Let's see what happens,” Cone added.
