Manila Clasico is perhaps the toughest out of all the first round matchups but Magnolia getting into equal ground with the Gin Kings is a win already.
Despite a 0-3 start to the All-Filipino, Magnolia has found a way to enter the playoffs as the no. 6 seed.
That’s important in a lot of ways for the Hotshots.
First of all, it was an impressive run for Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, winning five of its last six games to crash the quarterfinals.
Second of all, getting into the top six means that the Hotshots are guaranteed at least two more games as they’re locked in a best-of-3 series against Brgy. Ginebra.
Sure, Manila Clasico is perhaps the toughest out of all the first round matchups but Magnolia getting into equal ground with the Gin Kings is a win already.
“Happy ako dahil kahit papaano, napunta kami sa equal opportunity, walang advantage at walang disadvantage doon sa playoofs. Best-of-3 lang,” Magnolia head coach Chito Victolero.
“Mahirap kasi we’ll be facing Ginebra, ang maganda lang dito is walang advantage kalaban namin. Kasi kung napunta kami sa 7, babagsak kami sa twice-to-win,” he added.
Manila Clasico should be fiercely fought once again.
And despite being the lower seed, Victolero likes his team’s chances to advance. After all, Magnolia is peaking at the right time, winning three straight.
The Hotshots also just did Ginebra last conference, beating the then two-time champion Gin Kings on their way to a Governors’ Cup crown.
Magnolia was the lower seed then too.
“We know Ginebra can beat us, but we also have a chance to beat Ginebra. So equal. Nandoon kami sa situation na equal opportunity, hindi yung pag talo kami, out na kami,” Victolero said.
“Kung maganda gameplan namin, bakit hindi? Ito, sobrang hirap din pero I like my chances,” he added.
