June Mar Fajardo was at the right place, at the right time to lift San Miguel over TNT in Game 1 of the quarterfinals
San Miguel fell behind by as much as 12 points before ultimately pulling off a comeback triumph over TNT in Game 1 of their quarterfinals series in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.
"First of all, thank God for this win. We thought we were losing because of that bad start," head coach Leo Austria said post-game. "Swerte lang kami rito."
The Beermen clawed their way back, but were still down by three inside the last two minutes. "TNT wanted to beat us badly, but thankfully, the players refused to lose," coach Leo said.
Indeed, it was at that point that June Mar Fajardo cleaned up a miss by Chris Ross.
Following a defensive stop, he cleaned up another miss, this time by Marcio Lassiter.
In both instances, the five-time MVP just so happened to be at the right place, at the right time for an offensive rebound and then a follow-up basket.
That is exactly why he could do nothing but agree with his mentor that luck had something to do with their win. "Oo nga, oo nga. Swerte rin kami, may halong swerte," he said.
He then continued, referring to his back-to-back putbacks, "Nagkataon lang na nandun din ako."
Not long after, Fajardo's split from the stripe registered the final winning margin for San Miguel.
Still, he and his teammates know full well they need much more than luck if they are to sweep the series on Monday. "Siyempre, mahirap yun kasi ine-expect naming all-out sila next game. Kailangan naming i-step up din game namin," he said.
