PBA: Better guard play key to Magnolia’s big Game 2 win
During Manila Clasico, the team’s backcourt is the perfect counter against Ginebra’s overwhelming size advantage.

Magnolia’s strength, aside from a stout defense, has always been all about its superior guard rotation.

During Manila Clasico, the team’s backcourt is the perfect counter against Ginebra’s overwhelming size advantage.

But in Game 1 of the Clasico quarterfinals in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup playoffs, Jio Jalalon and Mark Barroca, both key guys that make the Hotshots effective, struggled big time.

Jalalon scored only four points in the loss, shooting 2/9 from the field. Barroca was worse, good for only three points on 1/9 shooting.

In Game 2, both guards recovered and the Hotshots got a much-needed win to extend the series.

Barroca was steady with 13 points while Jalalon was just all over the floor, finishing with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, six assists, and five steals.

“I expected them to step up this game. Sabi ko nga, wala lang siguro sa wisyo yung dalawa sa game na yun, it’s not Jio Jalalon and Mark Barroca,” head coach Chito Victolero said of his top-2 point guards.

“I know them and they told me yesterday na they will go all out on this game. Thankful and proud of these guys. Yung game nila ngayon, yun talaga yung Jio Jalalon and Mark Barroca,” he added.

Forcing a 1-all tie, the Hotshots now focus o na decisive Game in just two days.

Despite being the lower seed, Magnolia’s confidence never wavered and after a big Game 2 decision, the Hotshots go to sudden death with high hopes.

“Okay naman, I like my chances kasi umpisa pa lang naman ng series, gusto ko na yung chances namin. Kasi nga I don't want to go to that twice-to-beat disadvantage eh,” Victolero said.

“But yun nga ang nangyari, so parang naunahan kami, nag-0-1 then twice to beat ngayon. So at least naka-tie kami, and sana with the same effort and same desire, I think we have a chance,” he added.
