Jayson Castro and the TNT KaTropa push defending champion San Miguel Beer to a sudden death showdown after a huge Game 2 win.
TNT is able to close this time around.
The KaTropa used a strong fourth-quarter stand to avoid elimination in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, turning back defending champion San Miguel Beer, 93-88, Monday at the Big Dome.
Falling apart late in Game 1, TNT hit the big baskets in Game 2 and this short best-of-3 quarterfinals series is now tied at one game each with sudden death coming up.
After five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo helped the defending four-time champions tie the game at 86, Jayson Castro went to work on the side of the KaTropa.
Castro first found Troy Rosario wide-open at the corner for the go-ahead triple with 1:06 to go.
After TNT got the stop, Castro beat Fajardo at the basket and scored the dagger layup in the final 31 seconds, 91-86.
The KaTropa got another stop in the following San Miguel possession to help seal the win.
“We just tied the series,” said head coach Bong Ravena.
“Nothing to celebrate. San Miguel player really well, buti na lang pumapasok outside shots namin. Yun ang wala last game,” he added.
Against the Beermen in Game 2, TNT got some big games from its key players to hold off the defending champions.
RR Pogoy led the KaTropa in scoring with 20 points and nine rebounds while Castro was good for 19 points and nine assists.
Troy Rosario had a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double while Don Trollano added 12 points for good measure.
San Miguel’s twin towers came through with five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo posting an incredible 26 points and 19 rebounds despite being limitied by an apparent knee injury in the fourth quarter.
Christian Standhardinger added 18 points and eight rebounds for the champs. Game 3 is Wednesday also at the Big Dome.
