San Miguel Beer has ruled the Philippine Cup since 2015 and for four years, the Beermen have been rarely challenged in the All-Filipino.
Which is why it was a little unusual, perhaps even refreshing, that the upgraded Beermen had trouble eliminating rival TNT in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
San Miguel was lucky to escape in Game 1 and after getting pushed in Game 2, the Beermen finally woke up to deliver a masterful performance in a decisive Game 3.
No one is saying that San Miguel will be impossible to beat, however, it was a sight to see the defending four-time champions struggle quite a bit in the opening round of the playoffs.
A bounce here and there and they would have been swept.
Still, there was never a time that they felt threatened. The thought of the dynasty crumbling in round 1 never messed with the Beermen’s psyche.
This San Miguel dynasty was not built overnight and fortunately, the players themselves know when to flip that switch.
If all else fails, the Beermen have a reliable management team that will steer them into the right direction when they sometimes drift away from the task at hand.
