Rain or Shine sure got a gem with the 6th pick last year in Javee Mocon.
Mocon has had his moments in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup and the latest moment came Friday in Game 1 of the semifinals against Magnolia.
The former San Beda star stood out, leading ROS with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double as the no. 2 Elasto Painters zoomed ahead for a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Despite the strong performance however, Mocon was his own worst critic, saying he could have done better.
“Para sa akin, okay lang,” the rookie forward said of his series-opening performance.
“Kasi at the fourth quarter, ang dami kong turnovers so ang dami ko pang lapses. Marami pa akong dapat matutunan,” he added.
Still, his head coach assures him that his development is ahead of schedule.
Asked about his rookie’s performance, ROS head coach Caloy Garcia was hardly surprised.
He says Mocon’s work with the San Beda Red Lions made him more than ready to play in the PBA.
“He played today not like a rookie. I think when we were watching him before in San Beda, he was one of the key to their championships,” Garcia said.
“That was the reason why we got him, we know how special he was. But mahirap batiin eh, kasi it’s just the first game and we know they [Magnolia] will do some adjustments on Javee,” he added.
With some big words from Garcia, Mocon sees it as a challenge to keep proving his head coach right.
“All thanks to him din kasi he gave me that confidence in the eliminations, pinapasok nya ako eh. Dun nag-build yung confidence ko tsaka sa help din ng mga veterans,” Mocon said.
“It takes a lot of responsibility for me rin kasi I have to step up sa word nya, yung sinasabi nya [Garcia]. Siguro for me I take it as a compliment at motivation na rin na maging worth it sa sinasabi nya,” he added.
