PBA: Alas as Phoenix grinds out Game 3 win: “Salamat wala si Marcio”

No one outside the Beermen knew about Marcio Lassiter’s injury pre-game and Phoenix head coach Louie Alas was just happy to take the development through Game 3.
After a Game 1 loss, Phoenix head coach Louie Alas said that his team can’t afford to even blink against San Miguel in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
However, in Game 3 of the series, the Fuel Masters blinked but somehow still managed to hold on for a crucial 92-90 win.
JC Intal missed two free throws late and Phoenix had to scramble on defense to prevent the Beermen from stealing a last-second decision.
The gutsy victory by Phoenix officially made this a series as the Fuel Masters cut their deficit in half, 1-2, instead of going to Game 4 staring at a near-insurmountable 0-3 hole.
“Naka-attempt pa sila pero pag nag fall yung tira na yon, wala na akong magagawa,” Alas said on his team’s final defensive play while holding on to a two-point lead.
“Maganda depensa eh,” he added.
Speaking of defense, Phoenix used a physical game to hold the Beermen to only 90 points, the champs’ lowest output in this series so far.
It’s no coincidence that that effort led to the Fuel Masters’ first win in the semifinals.
“Less than 100 yung hinihingi namin,” Alas said.
“At least yung chances namin mas malaki. Pag lumampas ng 100, as in super, wala na kaming chance sa San Miguel,” he added.
Another factor that led to Phoenix taking a game from the Beermen was the absence of Marcio Lassiter on the other end.
Marcio led all scorers with 24 points in Game 2 but he was out in Game 3 after apparently dealing with back issues.
No one outside the Beermen knew about that information pre-game and Alas was just happy to take the development.
“Salamat wala si Marcio,” he said.
Game 4 of the Phoenix-SMB series will be on Tuesday.
