Magnolia just won a big playoff game with its star guard scoring a grand total of zero points.
In Game 5 against Rain or Shine Wednesday, Paul Lee shot 0/8 from the field and scored zero points, his first scoreless outing in the All-Filipino since the Hotshots opened the season against TNT a couple of months back.
Against the KaTropa then, Lee was limited due to injury and played limited minutes.
Against the Elasto Painters in a crucial playoff game, Lee was on the court for 28 minutes and scored zero.
Still, Magnolia took a 3-2 lead with an 82-74 win as Lee’s influence goes beyond just scoring the basketball for his team.
“Paul Lee, he knew na it’s not the points but the leadership. Yung presence niya ang pinaka-importante samin,” head coach Chito Victolero said.
“How he draws the defense, how he leads the team [that’s more important],” he added.
With Lee’s struggles in Game 5, two other Magnolia guards stepped up in Mark Barroca and Jio Jalalon.
The two scored 14 points apiece to lead the Hotshots and both came up with big plays down the stretch.
It goes back to Lee’s presence that draws the defense towards him, freeing up space for the rest of the group.
“Ngayon off night si Paul, grabe din yung depensa na binibigay nila sa kanyan so na-open yung iba.,” Barroca said.
“Yun maganda rin kay Paul, kasi nagde-decoy siya para sa team niya eh. Yun din maganda sa team namin parang di mo masasabi kung sino s-score,” he added.
