The supposed punch from Alex Cabagnot, which sent RJ Jazul down to the floor, prompted Alex Mallari to push Cabagnot in retaliation which then prompted Matt Ganuelas-Rosser to rush to the scene and confront Mallari.
Game 4 of the Phoenix-SMB series was easily the most physical and the signature play came late in the first half when Alex Cabagnot appeared to punch RJ Jazul in the nuts in front of the Phoenix bench and right beside a referee.
That supposed action, which sent Jazul down to the floor, prompted Alex Mallari to push Cabagnot in retaliation which then prompted Matt Ganuelas-Rosser to rush to the scene and confront Mallari.
There was a mini commotion afterwards before cooler heads prevailed.
At the end of the review, Mallari was ejected for two technical fouls and MGR got a tech as well. Somehow, Cabagnot escaped with no violation.
“I don’t know kung ano yung pinapanood na tape nung nasa table dun. Kita namin sinuntok si RJ, ako nasa harap din ako. Talagang sinuntok,” Phoenix head coach Louie Alas argued.
“Bakit nila pinapanood yun kung di reviewable? Closed fist yun sinuntok right in front of the ref. Ang mabigat pa nun kami pa nawala ng isang gwardya, yung sumuntok nandun lang,” he added.
Cabagnot shot the technical free throw for the Beermen after the dust settled on the incident.
He finished with 18 points for SMB in the win. The media didn’t catch him for an interview after the game.
Jazul says Mallari’s ejection was unfair but added he’s in no position to make a call since he’s not an official.
“Siyempre unfair yon. Kahit saang anggulo mo tignan unfair yon. Kami pa yung nadale,” he said.
“I don’t know kung bakit kahit ano wala. Pero siyempre hindi naman ako referee. Call nila yon. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ganoon. Kahit ilang beses i-replay nandoon yung act ng punching,” he added.
