Well, it’s better than nothing.
Following a Board meeting Thursday, the PBA will be able to accommodate Gilas Pilipinas training with some adjustments in arrangements.
The national team will start twice-a-week practice starting June. Gilas will practice every Monday and Thursday.
Gilas usually only practiced during Mondays before adjusting accordingly as FIBA tournaments near.
“Sa Board meeting, pinag-usapan na yung schedule. Monday and Thursday from June to July. Morning sessions yun,” PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said.
“Yung August, pag-uusapan ulit kasi playoffs natin yun eh,” he added.
The 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, where Gilas is set to play Serbia, Italy, and Angolia in Group D, will start on August 31.
“Pagu-usapan pa yun kasi gusto ni coach Yeng araw-araw. Ang problema natin, semifinals at Finals yun,” Marcial said.
“Pero pwede na gamitin ni coach yung sampung 10 na out na [by that time]. Yung complete na Gilas lineup, titignan pa natin. Pero all-out support na ang Board,” he added.
According to Marcial, coach Yeng will submit a 14-man lineup by June.
Aside from trying to accomodate Cleveland’s Jordan Clarkson, Gilas is also looking at Arizona State’s Remy Martin as a possible inclusion.
“Yung core ng last Gilas, siguro dagdag na lang ng one or two,” the Commissioner said
“Tinitignan nila si Remy Martin at si Clarkson. Yun ang mga adjustment ni coach. Pero yung core, yun na yon,” he added.
Aside from the usual team practices, Gilas also has plans of doing a camp abroad, likely two weeks before the World Cup.
The Philippines is looking at Russia to set up camp.
“May balak sila by August, pumunta ng Russia,” Marcial said.
“Tapos may plano din na magdala ng teams dito [Manila] na kakalabanin natin,” he added.
