PBA: Lesson learned for PHX after getting schooled by SMB

At least Phoenix finally knows what it’s like to be in the PBA semifinals.

The top-ranked Fuel Masters ran into San Miguel Beer in the Philippine Cup playoffs, eventually taking a 4-1 series loss to the defending four-time champions, ending a breakout campaign in bitter defeat.

Still, there’s some good things to take for Phoenix even after a 105-94 Game 5 loss Thursday.

For one, the Fuel Masters fought to the end, cutting a 25-point deficit down to four before finally getting knocked out following a haymaker from San Miguel guard Terrence Romeo in the final minute.

“Lesson learned,” said head coach Louie Alas after the series loss.

“This was the first time we’ve been in the semis so easily, we got down by 25. But until the last second we kept fighting that’s why I’m very thankful. Ito ang gusto ko makita sa team,” he added.

After getting schooled by the Beermen, Alas says his Fuel Masters will only grow stronger from here.

“Sabi ko nga, mukhang malaki bonus namin. Not financial ah, but para sa experience namin for the next conference,” he said.

“Pag nag-set ka ng goal dapat di mo binababa, at least mapantayan mo or ma-surpass,” Alas added.
