PBA Finals: SMB free throws a legit concern for Magnolia
“We gave a lot of free throws, that’s it,” star guard Paul Lee said after Game 2.

For the most part, Magnolia has improved a lot in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals in 2019 compared to the 2018 debacle against San Miguel Beer in 2018.

However, a huge cause of concern for the Hotshots now is the amount of free throws they have given up.

In just two games, Magnolia allowed San Miguel to shoot 65 free throws, including 36 during a Game 2 loss.

The Beermen converted 47.

For comparison, the Hotshots have shot just 5/10 in Game 1 and 11/19 in Game 2.

“We gave a lot of free throws, that’s it,” star guard Paul Lee said after Game 2.

“Sa start, I thought na tumaas ulit yung chance namin e. Pero yun nga eh, what do you expect? San Miguel yan eh. At least, we tried to keep it close pero nung nakuha nila yung momentum nila... And we gave too many free throws. So ayun. 36 attempts tapos na-convert nila 26? Mataas yun,” he added.

For a team that prides itself on defense, it has to be a little frustrating for Magnolia to give up that many fouls on the Beermen.

Still, the Hotshots are pretty happy with the defense for the most part. They just have to clean things up a little bit.

“Feeling naman namin nandun yung aggressiveness but sobra lang kaya nag-foul kami. Nafa-foul namin sila ng wala sa lugar. Like kanina, penalty na kami, eight seconds na lang natitira tapos bigla kami nag-foul. Yun yung kailangan namin bawasan next game,” Lee said.

“Tignan natin bukas kung ano magagawa namin sa depensa at kung anong scheme magagawa namin. So far, wala pang idea. But we'll try na paghandaan yun for Sunday,” he added.
