Finals MVP June mar Fajardo grabbed 31 rebounds in Game 7, just nine less than the entire Hotshots crew, to set a new local record.
Finals MVP June Mar Fajardo was a total beast in Game 7 of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Finals Wednesday at the Big Dome.
With both San Miguel Beer and Magnolia struggling on offense, June Mar Fajardo grabbed all the rebounds and helped the Beermen complete an incredible rally for a 72-71 win.
Fajardo grabbed 31 rebounds, just nine less than the entire Hotshots crew, to set a new local record.
June Mar broke the longest-standing individual record in the leage with his 31-rebound effort. The previous high was 29 from 7-Up’s Marcelo Simbulan in 1975.
Of course, Fajardo was not paying attention to any record. He was just trying get his hands on the ball.
“Sinabi lang sakin kanina [31 rebounds]. Hindi ko na iniisip yun, basta try ko lang talaga best ko na kunin yung rebound,” June Mar said.
“Trabaho ko yun eh. Masaya ako na nakakuha ako ng record na ganun,” he added.
In Game 7, the league’s reiging five-time MVP was more focused on helping his team win a fifth straight Philippine Cup title.
The Beermen were down 17 in the second half and had to rally in the fourth to take the hard-fought win.
Still staring at an eight-point lead entering the final quarter, the Beermen, especially June Mar, had to dig deep.
“Sobrang nakaka-pagod. Dedepensa pa ako tapos opensa pa. Ang dami pa bumabangga sakin. Sobrang pagod talaga ako, pero ang iniisip ko may chine-chase kami na history,” Fajardo said.
“Ano ba yung pagod sa last 12 minutes? Last 12 minutes na lang so kung kailangan i-push, push na yung sarili. Worth it naman yung pagod namin,” he added.
