PBA: One SMC team will join Asia League. Which is it?
Three PBA teams will see action in September for the Asia League’s premier Terrific 12 tournament in Macau.

The Asia League finally gets its wish of a stronger PBA contingent for its 2019 plans.

Three PBA teams will see action in September for the Asia League’s premier Terrific 12 tournament in Macau.

Blackwater and NLEX will once again suit up to represent the Philippines while the San Miguel group will finally make its presence felt as its ready to send of its three teams to Macau later this year.

“So far, NLEX has agreed and Blackwater to join the Asia League,” PBA Board Vice Chairman Dickie Bachmann said Thursday.

“And I think one of the San Miguel teams will be joining. They just can’t decide, because we just don’t know the schedule,” he added.

San Miguel teams usually make deep playoff runs in the PBA and it’s not a stretch to think about all three making a conference semifinals.

It’s also not hard to imagine the PBA championship being decided by two San Miguel teams, which just happened in the All-Filipino when the flagship Beermen defended their title against the Magnolia Hotshots.

Blackwater and NLEX saw action in 2018’s Super 8 tournament and both finished with 2-1 records in group play.

The Road Warriors advanced to the semis and ended up in fourth place. The Elite, on the other hand, failed to move on due to inferior quotient.

No PBA team played in last year’s Terrific 12 and instead, a D-League selection under the banner of the iECO Green Warriors represented the Philippines. That team, backed by Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy, finished 0-2 in group play.

For the 2019 Asia League, MVP group’s flagship TNT KaTropa will be on standby for NLEX.

The Road Warriors are set to play in the PBA’s Dubai games in October and NLEX can only accomodate either one of Macau or Dubai.

“Yung NLEX, pag sila yung Dubai baka mag-beg off sila sa Asia League,” PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said.

“Pero mukhang gusto na pumasok ng Talk ‘N Text [for Asia League] so hindi pa rin natin alam,” he added.
