CJ Perez just made sure to remind everyone the he is indeed the no. 1 rookie in the PBA this year.
Perez’s career-high outing drove Columbian to a breakthrough win in the 2019 Commssioner’s Cup, a big 120-105 victory over NLEX Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Connecting on 16 out of 21 attempts from the field, Perez scored a career-high 39 points.
The league’s top rookie also had nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
“Lagi ko sinasabi ko nga sa kanya na he is our scorer and defender at the same time. But sometimes siyempre na do-double team siya or malas talaga kaya he deflects to his teammates. Defense and offense maganda yung laro niya,” head coach Johnedel Cardel said of Perez.
“Sabi niya sa akin before this game, 'Coach, kunin natin yung laro na ito.' At least we can build on this win before we take a break. We will regroup with our new import and start training again,” he added.
Columbian started to pull away as early as the second quarter and the Dyip led by as many as 32 in the fourth, 105-73.
After Perez, outgoing import Kyle Barone poured 31 points for Columbian. Jackson Corpuz added 18 for the now 1-3 Dyip.
Import Tony Mitchell led NLEX with 32 but the Road Warriors dropped a fourth straight game for a 0-4 mark.
