Phoenix survived the Elite Friday, opening the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup with an close 103-98 win at the MOA Arena.

Slow to start in the first half, the Fuel Masters picked up the pace in the third quarter, scoring 39 poits, to create separation.

Come the fourth, Phoenix pulled away led by as many as 19. The Fuel Masters used all of that cushion to survive in the final seconds to secure win no. 1 in the mid-season joust.

“Actually I’m looking at the stats, lahat ng gusto kong mangyari, nangyari except for turnover points,” head coach Louie Alas said.

“Expected naman kasi sabi ko nga, di naman sila [3-0] for nothing. Hindi tsamba ginagawa nila,” he added.

Phoenix was up 93-74 in the fourth before Blackwater used a final rally to cut the deficit to two, 98-100.

However, breaks went the way of the Fuel Masters and Phoenix sealed the win with several stops and three free throw makes.

Matthew Wright was the high man for the Fuel Masters, scoring 22 points, 16 in an sizzling third-quarter performance.

Former Best Import Rob Dozier made his PBA return with 18 points while RJ Jazul and Calvin Abueva added 17 and 13 points respectively.

The Elite dropped to 3-1 but they did get 25 points from rookie Ray Parks and another 24 points from import Alex Stepheson.

Blackwater 98 - Parks 25, Stepheson 24, Belo 12, Sumang 10, Tratter 7, Maliksi 6, Al-Hussaini 6, Digregorio 4, Cortez 2, Alolino 2, Salem 0.

Quarterscores: 15-17, 41-41, 80-71, 103-98.
