PBA: Bolts zap shorthanded Phoenix to get streak going
Now winners of two straight, Meralco rised to 3-2 in the team standings while the Fuel Masters dropped to 1-2 following back-to-back losses.

Meralco gets it first winning streak of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The Bolts zapped a shorthanded Phoenix team Wednesday, taking a close 101-95 win at the Big Dome.

Now winners of two straight, Meralco rised to 3-2 in the team standings while the Fuel Masters dropped to 1-2 following back-to-back losses.

“It’s nice to get some momentum in this tournament, it’s been a long time since we won two games in a row,” said head coach Norman Black.

“My players played a lot better in the second half,” he added.

Down one at the break, the Bolts used a strong third-quarter surge to turn the tables.

Import Gani Lawal and Baser Amer combined for 17 of the team’s 34 points in the pivotal third and Meralco would keep Phoenix at bay in the fourth for the win.

Lawal scored 28 to lead the Meralco offense, 19 came in the second half.

Amer added another 20 while Chris Newsome was good for 18 points.

Phoenix got 20 points from Matthew Wright but the team definitely felt the absences of head coach Louie Alas and Calvin Abueva in the loss.

Both were suspended following last week’s crazy incidents.

Former Best Import Richard Howell replaced the injured Rob Dozier but he struggled in his PBA return, finishing with only eight points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

The scores:

Meralco 101 - Lawal 28, Amer 20, Newsome 18, Salva 15, Quinto 8, De Ocampo 6, Almazan 3, Pinto 3, Hodge 0, Jackson 0, Caram 0, Hugnatan 0.

Phoenix 95 - Wright 20, Perkins 16, Jazul 12, Marcelo 10, Howell 8, Mallari 7, Chua 6, Dennison 5, Intal 5, Kramer 4, Revilla 2, Wilson 0.

Quarters: 21-19, 46-47, 80-72, 101-95.
