ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal — Every now and then, former Ateneo star Von Pessumal can get major buckets for San Miguel Beer, especially when the Beermen play TNT.
It happened in the All-Filipino and it happened again Saturday here for the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Pessumal went a perfect 8/8 from deep, setting a new PBA record for most triples without a miss in a single game. The previous high was six, which was shared by six players.
24 points is his new career-high, one point better than his previous career-high effort against TNT in the Philippine Cup.
But just like earlier in the year, #VonFire still means absolutely nothing in a bad SMB loss. The Beermen lost to the KaTropa by 11 points. The Beermen lost to TNT again Saturday, this time by 13.
San Miguel trailed by as many as 24 points.
“I hate to repeat myself,” Pessumal said.
“But I’d rather get the win and score zero. That’s how it is. But I’m proud of my team, we were down big but we didn’t give up until the last possesion,” he added.
A designated shooter for a loaded Beermen squad, Pessumal reiterates that he’s just out there to play his role.
Every now and then he’ll get major buckets for San Miguel but he comes in and just tries to play the right way and he only wants to help the Beermen to win.
“If I’m open, I’ll shoot it. Actually I didn’t even know that I didn’t miss,” he said.
“Nagugulat ako minsan yun pala yung ginawa ko sa box score. Swerte ako today,” Pessumal added.
