Northport just holds on for the win.
The Batang Pier built a big lead and kept it Wednesday, beating Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Big Dome, 102-99.
Up by as many as 16 in the second half, Northport’s advantage was down to single digits inside the last two minutes. Fortunately, the Batang Pier were cool and calm, hitting timely shots to preserve the win.
Northport once again grabbed a share of first place, tying idle Blackwater on top of the team standings with identical 5-1 records.
“It’s a total team effort, it was the players stepping,” head coach Pido Jarencio said.
“Naka-focus sila. Basta kami, ang goal namin dumating sa playoffs,” he added.
Only eight players scored for Northport but seven of them ended in double figures.
Sean Anthony led everyone with 22 points to along with eight rebounds and four assists.
Paolo Taha added 16 while Mo Tautuaa and Jonathan Grey were good for 14 apiece.
Magnolia got 21 from Ian Sangalang but the Hotshots just couldn’t recover from a poor third quarter when the Batang Pier took a 16-point lead, 70-54.
The Hotshots dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
