PBA: Fuel Masters snap skid after tough win over Alaska
The win allowed Phoenix to snap a three-game slide, improving to 2-3 in the team standings. The win by the Fuel Masters also stopped the Aces’ three-game streak going in.

Phoenix finally got its second win of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup in the most Phoenix way possible.

Locked in a defensive battle against Alaska, the Fuel Masters grinded out a tough 78-76 victory Saturday at the Big Dome.

The win allowed Phoenix to snap a three-game slide, improving to 2-3 in the team standings. The win by the Fuel Masters also stopped the Aces’ three-game streak going in.

Tied at 76, Justin Chua got an offensive rebound to keep a Phoenix possession alive before he found himself open for the go-ahead layup.

The Fuel Masters got a stop on the other end to preserve the victory.

“Para akong rookie kanina, sobrang nerbyos ko for the game,” said head coach Louie Alas. It was Alas’ first game back after a two-game suspension.

“Hopefully, magtuluy-tuloy na kami,” he added.

Phoenix got a big game from import Richard Howell, who went for 24 points and 29 rebounds. Behind Howell were locals Alex Mallari and Matthew Wright, adding 15 and 14 points respectively.

Chris Banchero was the high man for Alaska as the Aces’ lead guard posted 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Nino Johnson, the team’s new import, only had six points and four rebounds but he did have five steals and four blocks.

Phoenix 78 - Howell 24, Mallari 15, Wright 14, Chua 10, Intal 6, Revilla 6, Perkins 2, Jazul 1, Kramer 0, Marcelo 0, Wilson 0, Dennison 0.

Alaska 76 - Banchero 18, Manuel 10, Thoss 8, Racal 8 Teng 6, Johnson 6, Casio 6, Cruz 6, Pascual 2, Enciso 2, Exciminiano 2, Ayaay 2, Galliguez 0. 

Quarterscores: 16-12, 35-30, 52-50, 78-76.
