The 2019 FIBA World Cup is less than 100 days away and Gilas Pilipinas’ schedule is about to get hectic.
With still no actual time of preparation mid-June, the national team will surely take things into overdrive as they put together everything for the tournament set for September in China.
For one, Gilas Pilipinas will heavily rely on a training camp in Spain where they’ll play a number of games in a pocket tournament.
They leave for Europe on August 4.
“I think that’s a good tuneup for us, yung Spain. I think they have 7-8 NBA players and all of them will be there,” said national team head coach Yeng Guiao.
“Magandang experience yun para sa amin,” he added.
In China for the FIBA World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas is in Group D together with Serbia, Italy, and Angola.
Matching up with Spain could certainly help the Philippines prepare for Serbia and Italy but Gilas is also looking at its showdown with Angola, which could end up deciding how far the national team will go in the World Championships.
“African countries are there also [for Spain camp],” Guiao said.
“It’s also a good tuneup for us because meydo mapapahandaan natin yung Angolia. That’s the plan,” he added.
With the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup in full swing, Gilas is still dealing with an overly-tight schedule.
To make up some time, Gilas will soon practice twice-a-week before shifting to an everyday schedule come August.
The Philippine national team will then head to China for the World Cup by August 27.
“I'm not sure if we can still get scrimmages in China, but if we can, we will, if not, we will just practice by ourselves,” Guiao said.
“I think this is the best plan na mapag-kasya namin yung practice days tsaka yung hindi namin masyadong magulo yung schedule ng PBA,” he added.
