PBA: Just get SMB to a round 1 series and they're good
Getting a top-2 finish might be hard now but as long as the Beermen get into that magic top-6 position, they know they're good to go.

Fresh from a fifth straight PBA Philippine Cup title, San Miguel has struggled to start in the 2019 Commissioner's Cup.

That's been the norm for the Beermen for the last couple of years. Last season, they started 0-3 and still made the Finals. This year, San Miguel is 1-3 for the Commissioner's Cup but there's no panic just yet.

Getting a top-2 finish might be hard now but as long as the Beermen get into that magic top-6 position, they know they're good to go.

"As long as we can play better from here on out and try to get into a series in that first round, as long as we’re not twice-to-beat, twice-to-lose, whatever it is, I think I like our chances," guard Chris Ross said.

"If we can get into a series in that first round, I like our chances going forward," he added.

The last time the Beermen were a top-2 seed was back in the 2018 Philippine Cup.

Since then, they've been a 5th seed at best but that hasn't stopped them from making deep playoff runs.

In this current dynasty, the only time San Miguel is truly in trouble is if they somehow faced a twice-to-beat disadvantage. Their last two early eliminations were exactly like that.

"I mean, obviously it’s good to get one of the top two slots, but if you look at our record of our history of past conferences, we haven’t been top two in a while," Ross said.

"So like I said, as long as we can get into that series in that first round, then we like our chances," he added.
