BATANGAS CITY — No collapse this time for Rain or Shine.
The Elasto Painters barely escaped Columbian Sunday in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, surviving with a close 88-86 win in overtime at the City Coliseum here.
After losing a 25-point second half lead to Northport earlier this week, ROS had trouble against the Dyip, neeeding all of import Denzel Bowles’ production to head back to Manila with a victory.
Bowles delivered a triple-double, allowing the Elasto Painters to beat Columbian for the first time in five conferences.
ROS got back to .500 as a result, improving to 3-3 in the team standings.
"Well, it’s finally nice to get a win against Columbian. We lost for the last four conferences against them and I told the players the only motivation they can get is to win today’s game cause after that sorry loss that we played against NorthPort, we should bounce back," head coach Caloy Garcia said.
"And today, we almost lost it again because of free throws. So yun, I just told the players just to believe in themselves," he added.
After ROS failed to close things out in regulation with a bunch of missed free throws, the Dyip got life as Rashawn McCarthy buried a clutch corner triple to send the game in overtime.
Still tied at 86-all, the Elasto Painters finally got the basket they needed in extra time as Rey Nambatac made the marginal score with about two seconds to go.
Bowles had 29 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists for ROS with the only dent being he missed 14 free throws.
Nambatac and Jewel Ponferada had 10 points each as the only other Elasto Painters in double digits.
Import Lester Prosper led Columbian with 26 points and 15 rebounds but the Dyip dropped to 1-6 with the loss.
