PBA: Slow starts don’t worry champion Ginebra
Now with a solid 6-4 record, the Gin Kings are in play for a top-3 finish in the mid-season joust despite all the problems that came before.

What do you know, here comes Brgy. Ginebra.

After struggling up until the halfway point of their elimination round pretty much, the defending champion Gin Kings are alive and well.

Sunday at the Big Dome, Ginebra punched its ticket to the playoffs of the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup in emphatic fashion, smashing rival Magnolia in Manila Clasico.

Now with a solid 6-4 record, the Gin Kings are in play for a top-3 finish in the mid-season joust despite all the problems that came before.

“The cream always rises to the top, I always say that. I spent a whole career getting off to slow starts,” head coach Tim Cone said.

“Even the last year of this conference, we were 1-5 or 1-6 and we finished at 6th seed, I think we made a run, got to the 6th seed and we won a championship. So the early results don’t really matter that much,” he added.

While it’s always good and preferred to get into a good start in the elimination round, it’s not going to be the end of the world if you struggle a little bit.

As long as you make the playoffs, you have a chance. Basketball is the sport where the best team usually wins out in a playoff bracket anyway.

“You want to get out and get ahead, it’s an easier road to the playoffs. You always wanna do that, find the easiest road to the championship,” Cone said.

“[But] don’t buy in to slow starts. That’s what we always tell our players, don’t buy in to slow starts. Cream will rise to the top,” he added.
