San Miguel finally formalized its entry into the quarterfinals of the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup after coming out on top of Rain or Shine, 89-87, Saturday inside Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.
Chris McCullough continued to be the difference-maker for the Beermen, scoring four points to spearhead the 6-0 run that increased a slim one-point margin to a 89-82 advantage in his team's favor with 68 ticks to go.
The American wound up with a total of 24 points, 17 rebounds, five blocks, and four assists - and, most importantly, his third win in as many games as SMB's reinforcement.
With the third win in a row, they improved to 5-5 in the standings and assured themselves of a place in the next round.
Of course, it didn't come easy for San Miguel as the Elasto Painters were still threatening at 82-83 with under four minutes remaining until McColough got a split from the stripe, a booming triple, and a setup for a June Mar Fajardo dunk to boost his squad ahead by seven.
Javee Mocon and Carl Montgomery pulled Rain or Shine back to just within 87-89 and following a defensive stop, even had a golden opportunity to tie the tally or steal the win.
However, Beau Belga's last gasp triple try was only able to hit the front of the rim.
In the end, McColough was flanked by Fajardo who had 23 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks as well as Terrence Romeo who chimed in 13 markers of his own.
On the other hand, Mocon fronted the effort for the E-Painters with 20 points, eight rebounds, and five assists while Montgomery contributed an 18-marker, 13-board double-double. Though they now stand at 5-6, they remain inside the playoff picture.
