San Miguel pulled through in back-to-back do-or-die games to enter the semifinals
San Miguel discarded NorthPort's twice-to-beat advantage and the seventh-seed proceeded to dispatch of the second-seed following a well-earned 90-88 win, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.
Chris Mccullough pounded in a 30-point, 11-rebound double-double to power the Beermen to the semifinals of the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup.
In the endgame, it was also the American reinforcement who came up big, hitting the go-ahead layup over multiple defenders as well as the win-sealing free throws.
Still, Robert Bolick had more than enough time to make something happen for the Batang Pier, but Arwind Santos got a good contest on his triple try.
In the end, San Miguel also got much-welcome contributions from Arwind Santos who had 10 points, half coming in the last two minutes, and 10 rebounds as well as Alex Cabagnot who had 10 markers, five boards, and four assists.
That allowed the Beermen to rally around the loss of Marcio Lassiter who scored 11 points in just 15 minutes before exiting due to an apparent left knee injury.
More importantly, that allowed them to move on to the next round where they await the winner between Blackwater and Rain or Shine.
On the other hand, NorthPort's best elimination round finish failed to translate to the playoffs.
Armed with its first-ever twice-to-beat advantage in franchise history, it was unable to overcome dynastic San Miguel.
Fronting their effort in this one were Garvo Lanete and Mo Tautuaa who had 22 and 20 points, respectively. American reinforcement Prince Ibeh also added 15 markers and 20 rebounds while Bolick chipped in 13 points, seven boards, five assists and two steals.
