PBA: Ross scorches from outside as SMB takes 2-0 lead
Chris Ross nailed -- treys to guide San Miguel Beer to a 2-0 best-of-three semifinals lead over Rain or Shine.

San Miguel Beer woke up from its scoring stupor in the first quarter and made it rain from the outside to climb out of a 29-point hole and inch closer to Finals seat with 117-105 Game 2 win over Rain or Shine in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s semifinals Monday at the MOA Arena.

The Beermen, who missed their first eight triples, nailed 18-of-40 from the trifecta territory with Chris Ross accounting for 10 of those treys as SMB pushed its best-of-five series lead to 2-0.

Ross finished with 34 points including franchise-tying 10–of-16 three-point clip to pace the Beermen, who took the series opener, 111-105, last Saturday. Ross’ 10 triples tied injured teammate Marcio Lassiter’s record set in 2015 Governors’ Cup also against the Elasto Painters.

SMB can close the series on Wednesday.

Chris McCullough had 22 points, 11 boards and six assists while Alex Cabagnot had 17 markers for SMB. June Mar Fajardo had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds while Terrence Romeo got 12.

Christian Standhardinger had his night finished with seven seconds left in the third period with a disqualifying foul after getting whistled for two technical fouls. Standhardinger had 15 points and four boards for SMB.

“This game is unbelievable,” said SMB coach Leo Austria. “I was really surprised, down by 29 points and all of a sudden we were able to take the lead.”

The Beermen trimmed a once imposing RoS lead early in the second frame with scorching counterattack highlighted by a deluge of triples.

Down, 18-47, three minutes into the second period after a sluggish start, SMB rediscovered the same energy and intensity it had in the series opener to drop a 31-5 scoring spurt to enter the half with just a three-point deficit, 52-49.

The Beermen strung five straight three-pointers in their big scoring swing with Ross nailing three treys with his last pushing SMB within two, 49-51, with 47 seconds left in the second frame.

RoS went dry from the field in the last five minutes of the second quarter after import Carl Montgomery connected from the outside with 7:05 left in the frame. From there the Elasto Painters scored only from the line with Javee Mocon splitting his charities before Norbert Torres’ 2-of-2 with 31 ticks left before halftime.

“They almost had a perfect game in first 16 minutes but I think nagising ang mga players [ko],” Austria said.

RoS found its mark early, taking a 34-13 lead after the first 12 minutes of action. The Elasto Painters extended their lead to 47-18 with 9:28 left in the second period off a Jewel Ponferada connection from beyond the arc.

Montgomery had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Elasto Painters. Rey Nambatac had 15 points Ed Daquioag had 13 while James Yap scored 12 for RoS.
