I think ano eh, 'yung spirit ni Marcio Lassiter napapunta sa kanya ngayon, siya naging shooter namin -- SMB coach Leo Austria on Chris Ross
It seemed like San Miguel Beer barely missed the shooting of injured sniper Marcio Lassiter.
Not with Chris Ross around.
The Beermen guard picked the right time to explode from the outside as Ross willed SMB back from a 29-point hole to a 117-105 win over the shocked Rain or Shine on Monday night to take a 2-0 best-of-five 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals series lead at the MOA Arena.
Ross hit a franchise-tying 10 triples on his way to a 34-point outing for the Beermen.
Ross hit of 10-of-16 from down town including three in SMB’s blitz that turned an 18-47 deficit to just a 49-52 gap heading into halftime before the Beermen turned the tables around with a 68-point second half scoring output.
“I cannot believe, especially Chris Ross, on his shooting,” said SMB coach Leo Austria. “I think ano eh, 'yung spirit ni Marcio Lassiter napapunta sa kanya ngayon, siya naging shooter namin.”
Ross’ 10 triples tied Lassiter’s record back in 2015 Governors’ Cup also against the Elasto Painters.
The Beermen lost Lassiter last week to a left knee injury last Thursday in the do-or-die quarterfinals clash against NorthPort. Lassiter was diagnosed with an MCL sprain and will be out for at least six weeks.
Austria also credited his other wards for stepping up after a sluggish start.
“Not only Chris Ross, everyone stepped up after going 29 points down. And, they know the importance of this game,” said Austria. “So we have to win because if we will make it to the Finals, so at least sana hindi humaba ito.”
“Because in the other bracket, makikita natin na baka matapos ng maaga, so we need some time to re-focus, to recharge, because if we will get into the Finals, we're up against a really strong team,” he added.
Game 3 is on Wednesday.
