Over the course of this incredible San Miguel Beer dynasty, one of the only things to really stop the Beermen has been an opponent with a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs.
As the no. 7 seed in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs, San Miguel had to deal with one of its kryptonites anew.
But after powering through no. 2 Norhport and then surviving a tough out against Rain or Shine in the semis, the Beermen are once again in the Finals, ready to compete for another title.
San Miguel just keeps going thanks to its championship composure and unrivaled resiliency.
“That just shows the type of character we have, the type of character that those guys in that locker room, and the coaching staff and the bosses. I mean, we’re so resilient. We’ve been in every situation you can think of,” guard Chris Ross said.
“I think this is the first time we were in a twice-to-beat and we overcame it. So that’s kind of another check on the list for us. I mean, we battled, man. And we’ve had a lot of change this conference and credit to our team, credit to the coaching staff for not giving up and we were able to kinda right the ship, and now we’re back in the Finals,” he added.
In the Finals against the top-ranked KaTropa, Ross says the Beermen will need to reach another level to get the job done.
While San Miguel took a while to get things going in the Commissioner’s Cup, TNT was hot right from the start and the KaTropa have maintained that level all the way to the Finals.
TNT was no. 1 in the conference with a 10-1 record and they dethroned defending champion Ginebra after four games in the semifinals.
All in all, the KaTropa have only lost three times this conference. However, the Beermen have only lost twice since they acquired new import Chris McCullough which should set up an explosive fight for the title.
“Talk ‘N Text has been playing at a high level all conference and we kinda struggled at the beginning of the season, but we’ve made strides since then,” Ross said.
“I think we’ve lost twice since Chris has been here, so we’ve made a lot of strides and we’re playing some pretty good basketball. But we know we gotta bring it up another level if we wanna complete the task,” he added.
