NorthPort head coach Pido Jarencio was just relieved his wards avoided a meltdown.
It wasn’t the best way to win a game but NorthPort head coach Pido Jarencio will take it anytime.
Even if it gave him quite a scare.
“Talagang kinabahan ako,” said Jarencio after the Batang Pier’s 99-94 victory over Rain or Shine on Friday in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup opener at the MOA Arena.
NorthPort saw its 24-point lead in the third dwindle to only three late in the payoff period.
“Eh malakas din 'yung kalaban, 'di naman pipitsugin 'yung team na kalaban namin eh,” said a relieved Jarencio.
The Batang Pier posted their biggest lead, 70-46, with 8:05 in the third quarter after Mychal Ammons completed three-point play.
But the Elasto Painters patiently chipped away their deficit to three, 94-97, after a Chris Exciminiano layup with three ticks left.
Robert Bolick, fresh from a stint in the 2019 FIBA World Cup, played the hero’s role sinking two charities to hammer the final nails to Rain or Shine’s coffin.
“Basta kami, sabi nga nila... happy ending. Happy ending. Alam niyo 'yon. Tama naman, happy ending, basketball 'to eh, 'di ba?” said Jarencio. “Happy ako sa ending eh. Panalo eh.”
