In dire need of a win, Eugene Phelps unleashed a different side of El Destructor to help save Phoenix’s campaign in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.
Phelps didn’s score a ton, he only had 19 points in the win against Rain or Shine Wednesday. The more important parts however, were his 20 rebounds, five blocks, and seven assists.
His last assist was to RR Garcia to win the game with 1.8 seconds to go in regulation.
“It was a game that we needed, you know. We didn't wanna drop to 1-5. We get down 1-5, with the schedule it's gonna be hard to make the playoffs,” Phelps said.
“It was a tough game, we got the win, so we still have a chance to make the playoffs. That's all that really matters,” he added.
Phelps has no problem scoring points, he can drop 50 when he wants.
Perhaps the only thing Phelps likes more than scoring is rebounding the ball, he likes to collect rebounds like he’s collecting cash.
But in three years and multiple conferences in the PBA, El Destructor’s passing has been making strides and what a time for him to issue a game-winning assist during the close call against the Elasto Painters.
“I talked to my teammates and told them if I see them wide open, I'ma kick it. Just make it,” Phelps said.
“I'm getting double-teamed and triple-teamed all the time so somebody's gotta be wide open. I just gotta try to find wide open guys and like I said, I told my teammates just make the shots and we're good. They've been making them, so I'm getting my assists. I gotta thank my teammates for that,” he addded.
