San Miguel was set up for a trap game Wednesday in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.

The Beermen, entering with a two-game slide, took on a tricky Blackwater team without high-scorig import Dez Wells at the Cuneta Astrdome. Things almost fell apart as the game went into overtime after San Miguel fumbled a late nine-point lead.

Fortunately, the Grand Slam-seeking Beermen recovered in extra time, picking up a crucial victory to stay in the top-4 of the team standings.

“Wala namang games na madali samin, lahat mahirap. Hindi naman mahihina mga kalaban, kahit sabihin nating Blackwater nasa baba ng standings, pero gusto rin nila manalo,” five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo said.

“Muntik na kami. Buti nakuha namin yung panalo, kailangan namin to,” he added.

The twice-to-beat advantage that comes with finishing in the top-4 is the clear short-term goal for the Beermen for the moment.

And with import Dez Wells sidelined with an injury, the win over the Elite is all the more crucial for the banged up Beermen.

“Kailangan namin manalo eh, kasi nga sunud-sunod na talo namin,” June Mar said.

“Kailangan namin maka-abot sa top-4 para twice-to-beat kami,” he added.
