Rain or Shine almost lost another big lead to San Miguel Beer. Key word is “almost.”
The Elasto Painters withstood a fourth-quarter rally from the Beermen, pulling off a 91-85 win in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup Saturday at the Hoops Dome in Cebu.
ROS led by as many as 22 points but it evaporated in the fourth as the Beermen came roaring back.
San Miguel came as close to two points, 85-87, following a booming triple by Arwind Santos but that proved to be the Beermen’s final score as ROS would be steady from the line to preserve the win.
The Elasto Painters avoided the cellar with the victory, improving to 3-7 in the team standings. Meanwhile, San Miguel suffered a crucial loss and dropped to 6-4. If the playoffs start tomorrow, the Beermen will be at 5th place, staring at another opponent with a twice-to-beat advantage.
Rookie Javee Mocon and import Rich Ross led ROS with 16 points each in the victory. The two also combined for 26 rebounds.
Rey Nambatac and Gabe Norwood, who both sealed the win with separate trips from the foul line, added 15 apiece.
The Beermen got 19 points from Chris Ross and 17 from hometown hero June Mar Fajardo. However, new San Miguel import John Holland struggled for only 10 points in his first game.
