ANTIPOLO — TNT took the hard way but the KaTropa finally have the final twice-to-beat edge in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals.
TNT blew a big lead but import KJ McDaniels came to the rescue as the KaTropa outlasted San Miguel Beer Wednesday at the Ynares Center here, 114-109.
Up two in the final minute, McDaniels missed two crucial free throws and John Holland drilled a booming triple for San Miguel and the Beermen erased an 18-point lead to take over, 108-107.
KJ more than made up for his mistake and came back and hit a three of his own for the KaTropa, putting TNT up, 110-108, with 38 seconds to go.
After getting a break from a missed gimme by June Mar Fajardo, McDaniels made two free throws for a 112-109 lead before blocking Holland’s attempt from three for the tie.
TNT arrested a three-game slide and will enter the playoffs tied with the best record at 8-3. However, the KaTropa will be the no. 3 seed and will take on defending champion Magnolia in round 1.
The Beermen are the no. 5 seed with a 6-5 record. San Miguel takes on Ginebra and it can be noted that SMB's Grand Slam bid two years ago ended at the hands of the Gin Kings also in the quarterfinals.
McDaniels capped his heroic performance with 44 points for TNT, 18 in the fourth quarter. He also had 12 rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and two steals.
Troy Rosario scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the KaTropa while RR Pogoy addded 17 points. Jayson Castro returned to the lineup from injury and posted 12 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds.
San Miguel got 25 points from Holland, 17 in the second half, in an effort that just fell short. Terrence Romeo led the local attack with 18 points while Chris Ross and Marcio Lassiter were good for 16 each.
